Mural Art          Northeast

First, the group toured the quarry learning about how and why limestone is  taken from the earth.   Then, the group led hundreds of children and adults in the painting of a mural that featured Thomas Edison who owned the property at one time.  Artist, Joanne Tawfills, coached this mural.  “Cemex has supported Global Kids from the very start of our group,” says Rachael Paulson.  They have been a great neighbor and friend to us. The Global Kids continue to meet at Cemex’s recreation building for many of their meetings. “We can’t thank Howard Goddard enough.,” says Paulson.

The Gift of Limestone
The Global Kids were asked to host the children’s activities for Cemex’s Open House, 2000.

Sparta, NJ. Middle School Earth Mural

Author Dianne Ochiltree was the featured art coach of the day. The school's environmental club did the brainstorming for the theme and outline of the mural. They used all types of nature books to do their research for their drawings. Then, hundreds of 5th graders took part in an all day process of creating the mural. The mural shows Station Park in Sparta, NJ where the "Bag it Day "picnic takes place every year after the families clean the town. Stop &Shop and the Health Department sponsored this mural. It will be displayed next spring in Stop & Shop to remind the community to plan to participate in the event. The home of the canvas is the Mohawk Ave school where it will remain when it is not traveling for exhibit.

Paulson contacted Art Mile founder, Joanne Tawfallis, who is working on creating the Guinness Record of the longest mural in the world. Paulson asked Joanne if she would like to create a mural with Alex. Tawfallis traveled from Connecticut to New Jersey.

Joanne, the author, and Global Kids spent the day with Alex. Two wonderful students from Connecticut helped to coach the teens.

The theme of the mural is a lion, stars, and a boy named Alex looking through a window. As the mural flowed with stars we asked Alex to practice "breathing in" the good stars and blowing out the cancer that was inside of him. The mural traveled to Camp Adventure with the help of Home Depot in Long Island, New York. The camp is for children recovering from Cancer. The children there added to the mural by writing their thoughts and prayers onto the canvas.

Alex is now recovering from his cancer and Global Kids plan to help him celebrate his 6th birthday with a party.

May Alex keep breathing in those stars! We love you Alex.

The Flood Mural, Sponsored by Cemex

Not only did Rachael Paulson and her group donate the meals to those affected by the flood, they also sat with the families for several days joining them for meals and listened to them share their feelings about the disaster.

This mural was painted in remembrance of this act of kindness.  It shows the Global Kids carrying a special gift to one of the families.

After learning that one of the families had lost the road in front of their home and had to carry their baby across rocks and dirt, Toys R Us donated a stroller to the Global Kids who then surprised the family.  Global kids had to cross a tree bridge in order to get the gift to the family.

The mural was created at the Cemex Open House where a food fundraiser helped Cemex present the Flood Relief Fund with $1,000.00.

The Long Pond Elementary School students in Andover New Jersey prepared this colorful mural in  April!

Alex's Mural
When author Rachael Paulson read about Alex in the newspaper, she learned that the five year old had cancer. He was very ill and was unable to attend school to be with other children.

The Flood Mural Sponsored by Cemex The Flood Mural Sponsored by Cemex

In August of 2000, Moms and Sussex County were devastated by a flood that left many homeless.

The Global Kids came together and served meals to families.  Sparta restaurants and residents joined forces creating meals to be served to large groups of flood victims.
